Three thousand years ago, sailors left the harbours of this coast and stitched the Mediterranean into one market. We are still at it — with today’s ideas, today’s technology, today’s products.
They didn’t just carry goods. They carried the alphabet.
From Tyre, Sidon and Byblos, Phoenician ships worked every coast of the Mediterranean — cedar out, silver home, and in the holds beside the cargo, something no one had shipped before: a simple set of letters anyone could learn.
That alphabet became the ancestor of the one you are reading now. It is the founding lesson of this house: the greatest traders never moved products alone. They moved ideas — and the idea always outlasted the cargo.
Then trade grew a name.
The ships gave way to caravans, the caravans to counting houses — and in ports like Beirut, trade organised itself around something stronger than any single cargo: the merchant house.
